Dear Friends of Manos Amigas KC,
I would like to tell you about a young lady in Anapra, Gloria. Gloria works in a maquiladora (factory) earning $60 per week. She and her husband are expecting a baby this month. When COVID-19 was detected in Juarez, she was sent home with partial pay. Her husband’s hours were cut in half but he is still working as an essential worker. They have medical insurance through the maquiladora which will pay for her to deliver the baby at a specific hospital in Juarez – the same hospital that is receiving a large number of COVID-19 patients. Medical staff told her it is not safe to have her baby at that hospital. Now she is looking for a private doctor at a different hospital but has limited options because she is very late in her pregnancy and the baby will need to be delivered via C-section. Insurance will not cover the cost at a different hospital so she will need to pay $450 or $1500 (depending on the hospital) before the baby comes.
COVID-19 changed Gloria’s life dramatically and stole the joy of bringing a new life into the world. She is dealing with extra expenses, reduced income, and fear of a contagious and deadly virus. Gloria is one of the reasons I am committed to Manos Amigas. Through no fault of her own, she needs a hand up. She needs to know that people care about her and will help her through this. I encourage you to help me help Gloria and others in Anapra who do not have the resources to get through this pandemic on their own.
Thank you,
Sandy
